North Texas basketball player revived on the court
As 16-year-old Kamathi walked to the bench during the Crowley High School basketball game, he collapsed on the court. He lay on the floor, unresponsive. He wasn’t breathing.
His mother jumped the metal railing at Crowley’s gym and sprinted across the court to start CPR. Two coaches and one athletic trainer who tended to him pulled her away.
Within a minute, she watched the staff at Crowley cut through Kamathi’s jersey and shock him back to life with an AED. Kamathi had been dead for two minutes.
Her son was rushed to the hospital, underwent surgery and was diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. He had suffered sudden cardiac arrest on the court and needed a defibrillator implanted in his chest.
